When is this tour happening?

Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends at the airport in Oaxaca (OAX). If you require a different start or end spot, please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

Can I extend my stay in Mexico City, Oaxaca, or any other?

Of course. Please let us know in advance, so we can make the appropriate arrangements. We might need to charge an additional supplement for a private transfer if needed, depending on your choice of an extension before or after the tour. Should you need help choosing a place to extend your stay, just let us know.

What is the activity level of this tour?

This tour is very easy going. There will be walking in hot weather, so remember to bring water bottles from the hotel, or purchase on the way. It will not be too physically demanding, but you need to be able to walk comfortably on uneven terrain, dirt paths and cobble stone streets, and climb up steps. Climbing on the temples and pyramids can be a bit more demanding, but this is optional.

What should I bring?

We expect the weather to be hot throughout the tour, so make sure to stay hydrated and cool. You will be walking in archaeological sites, cobblestone streets and markets, so bring comfortable, light clothes, walking shoes, and sunscreen. Sunglasses and bug spray are also recommended. We all like to look good for every picture, but try and pack on the lighter side. Please remember to bring some cash in case you want to buy anything, and for tips to our Authentic Mexico Tours host and for the driver.

What are the Guelaguetza events included?

There are three events related to Guelaguetza included in this itinerary:

  1. Guelaguetza parade: on the evening of the Saturday prior to the main event (which happens on a Monday), the performers dress up in full costumes and flood the streets of Oaxaca, which fills with colour, music, and dances.
  2. Princess Donaji theater play: a beautiful folk story that tells the story of Princess Donaji, performed at the Guelaguetza Auditorium in Oaxaca City, the Sunday prior to the main event
  3. Guelaguetza main event: performed on the evening of Monday, July 22nd, the main event includes many performances dancing to traditional, folk music from all regions in the state of Oaxaca, and takes place at the Guelaguetza Auditorium in Oaxaca City
