Christmas Holiday Summary

Dec 16 – Dec 27, 2023

Christmas is one of the most important and revered holidays in Mexico, and like many other traditions, it is surrounded in festivals, crafts, food, music, and tradition.

This itinerary will take you to explore charming little towns and colonial cities, to discover the Mexican traditions surrounding Christmas, including visiting a small village that makes delicately ornate Christmas baubles.

Visit the small towns of Atlixco and Metepec, famous for their charm, Christmas spirit, and in the case of Metepec, their dedication to crafting “trees of life”, an art that creates detailed scenes with several elements made with terracotta, and painted in bright colours.

The city of Morelia welcomes us with its cool evenings, to spend Christmas right at the city centre, with opportunities to witness everyday life of locals, as the bustle in and out of shops, and around markets, in the spree of the holiday.

To close the experience, enjoy a visit to a Monarch butterfly sanctuary, where thousands of butterflies gather as they come to the Mexican forests in their annual migration, journeying south from Canada.

FAQ

When is this tour happening?

The tour starts December 16th and ends December 27th, 2023

Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends at the airport in Mexico City (MEX). If you require a different start or end spot, please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

Can I extend my stay in Mexico City, Morelia, or any other?

Of course. Please let us know in advance, so we can make the appropriate arrangements. We might need to charge an additional supplement for a private transfer if needed, depending on your choice of an extension before or after the tour. Should you need help choosing a place to extend your stay, just let us know.

What is the activity level of this tour?

This tour is very easy going. The sun shines bright even in winter, so remember to bring water bottles from the hotel, or purchase on the way. It will not be too physically demanding, but you need to be able to walk comfortably on uneven terrain, dirt paths and cobble stone streets, and climb up steps.

What should I bring?

We expect the weather to be mild throughout the tour, and we do expect variations in temperature throughout the day. The mornings in all cities visited can be 5° C (40° F) during the winter, but the sun still shines bright and hot at midday (sometimes reaching 20° C (68° F) when not in the shade), so make sure to bring appropriate clothes for both.

You will be walking in cobblestone streets and markets, so bring comfortable clothes, walking shoes, and sunscreen. Sunglasses and bug spray are also recommended. We all like to look good for every picture, but try and pack on the lighter side. Please remember to bring some cash in case you want to buy anything, and for tips to our Authentic Mexico Tours host and for the driver.

I still have questions!

We love questions. Please send us an email or use our contact form and we’ll be happy to go through any unanswered questions you may have, and send the detailed itinerary.

What are Mexico's Magical Towns, mentioned in this itinerary?

From our official Tourism Office in Mexico: Mexico is folklore, traditions, culture, history, nature and cuisine. All these attributes can be found in every corner of our country, but there are towns that concentrate this wealth in a cosmogony that makes them unique, and for this reason they have been called Magical Towns.

So when you visit a Pueblo Magico, or Magical Town, you are exploring a corner of Mexico that shines brighter than other places in terms of authenticity, and its gastronomic, cultural and historical richness.
